Circle Of Prayer

Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual
and the community must enter every day.

intercessory prayer finding solace

Before You Ask

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:7-8)

Many people think their prayers won’t work if they don’t utter them clearly enough, or fail to explain to God exactly what they mean, or don’t speak loudly enough to him with sufficient earnestness. But when this happens, prayer becomes so exaggerated that our Savior even forbids it.

Obviously Jesus does not want to discourage us from praying. His point is that when we pray we must have a sense of proportion. Once we have prayed, we must be quiet. We need to be like the farmer who has sown his seed. Help will come only when you are quiet in faith. Also in your sickness or with other needs, learn to be still and look to the Kingdom of God.

We can share our needs with the Father in a few words, without making a fuss, and rest assured that God already knows what we need and what he will do to help us. We don’t have to explain our requests in great detail to God, or try and make quite sure that he knows our needs. God knows about even the smallest matters and takes them straight into his heart. We can turn to him by glancing Heavenward, with no words at all. We can do this even when we pray about something concrete and tangible, or about something that specifically troubles us. We may realize that what we thought we needed is actually not necessary and that we can find a way right in the midst of how things are now.

This doesn’t mean that we just let things happen – as if everything will come of its own accord without our longing for it. Nor should we just cast a brief and hurried request at God’s feet. When this happens, we too easily lose sight of God, assume that everything comes to us without his help, and we forget to thank him. Then we cease to have a believing heart and are consequently not true children of God.

Jesus said, “Before you ask him.” Therefore we do need to make our requests known to him, otherwise many things will not be given that could have been given. It never displeases God when we come to him with our heartfelt requests. A real child asks for everything, knowing God has an ear for him. We should bring all our burdens and needs to him, for at the very least this helps to make us ever more aware that in all things God is the giver.

God always has our interest in mind. He carries our various needs with fatherly concern, eagerly waiting for us to come to him. He has not forgotten us. And when we feel tempted to think so, then all the more we should remember that he knows it all and cares for us. In fact, he knows much more about us and our needs than we do. Simple, childlike prayer is enough to move his heart, give you something out of the fullness of his compassion, and save you from all sorts of fear and trouble.

Prayer for Safety and Protection for Police and Border Agents

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please grant us your mercy. For your namesake, O God, we ask that you remember the sacrifice Jesus paid on our behalf and deliver us from the hand of our enemies. Deliver us from evil we pray and hear our petition. We acknowledge you, Lord Jesus, as the One who can forgive us our sins, grant us eternal life and give us victory over our enemies. We know that there has been much bloodshed in our land, and we ask your forgiveness for the sins of people in our cities. Forgive the generations of people that turned away from you and never asked for your forgiveness and mercy. We ask for it now. Please help us to bring criminals to justice while providing protection, safety and order to those in our communities. Father God, we ask that you bless us with your favor – on land, in the water, and in the airwaves. Help us to advance from victory to victory, crush the wickedness and oppression of our enemies, and establish your justice among men and among nations. “It is time for you to act, O Lord, for they have regarded your law as void.” (Psalm 119:126)

Therefore, we decree:

The Lord has set the lines of our inheritance and we have a good inheritance. We declare the enemy shall have no memorial nor any right of inheritance in the United States of America, nor in our city. Let angelic sentries be established over every boundary line, secure our borders, patrol our cities and hold the line of defense. We ask for safety over every place where people gather: in their homes, in the workplace, shopping malls, stadiums, events, and public venues. We declare safety and divine protection throughout our public transit systems, trains, airports and air transportation, schools and universities. We include all police, sheriff’s department, special forces, border patrol, military personnel and their families, as well as every private citizen to be covered by this prayer and declaration. We declare that “no weapon formed against us shall prosper and every tongue that rises against us in judgment shall be condemned,” according to your word in Isaiah 54:17.

We decree:

A release of wisdom, foresight, knowledge, and understanding; a release of courage and confidence to our police department personnel, border patrol agents, civil servants, and all those that work diligently to provide safety, protection, and service to American citizens. Let our teamwork produce effective, efficient results to achieve our goals. Lord, we ask that you would cause the enemy to reveal what he has planned in secret and expose the things that have been plotted to do harm to others. Help us to catch potential problems and diffuse situations before they escalate. You said in your word that if any man lacks wisdom he should ask and you would give it without reproach. We ask for wisdom and knowledge to be released by your Holy Spirit that will enable us to do our jobs better. We ask for an impartation of insight that can only come from you. You said in your word that you make us wiser than our enemies. Lord, bless us with wisdom that makes us wiser than our enemies, and grant that we would have a mouth filled with wisdom that our adversaries cannot contradict nor resist. This is your promise in Luke 21:15.

We decree:

A release of the glory of the Lord to be our rear guard. Thank You, Lord, for protecting us in our blind spots. Let the strength of the enemy’s power be broken now, in Jesus’s name. Let the works of evil and wrongdoing be thwarted, confused, and unraveled so that they come to nothing. We ask that you arrange the timing of our days in such a way that we do not encounter the evil intended for us. Help us avoid accidents and intentional works of evil that target police officers, border patrol agents, civil servants, and their families. Help us pay attention to you communicating with us. Give us ears to hear you and a heart that is quick to respond to you.

We decree:

An end to violent crimes. We decree a release of the Prince of Peace over our families, our cities, and states, and throughout our nation. You, O God, have a heart for these people and it is your desire to heal and restore the citizens of our great city. Your grace is here to transform us. Your love is here to restore us. Your love surrounds us and your power is setting us free. We release a spirit of liberty to release people from their torment, bondages, and discouragement. We declare we will not be afraid to stand up for what is right in your eyes. Give us courage, boldness, strength, and unwavering commitment to stand with you. Protect us from those that want us to fall. Impart your strength that we may honor you.

We decree:

A release of the spirit of reconciliation. We declare a release of forgiveness; we will not retain the sins of others and cause bitterness to grow in our hearts. We forgive those that have sinned against us, caused offense and wounded us. Let love overcome hatred, and good overcome evil. We refuse to let pain turn us into the likeness of the enemy of our soul. We refuse to become like those that have tried to make us like them. Give people a revelation of who you are, Father. Turn the tables on the enemy and draw people to you that they might be saved. We bind up the spirits of death and hell and forbid them from advancing against us in Jesus’s name. We declare there shall be no more untimely loss of life. Let your Holy Spirit release the power to heal and restore the people of our city, O God. Let the joy of the Lord be our strength.

Thank you, Father, for hearing our prayer and establishing our decree. You said in Job 22 that if we would return to you good would come to us, and in verses 27 and 28, “You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You will also declare a thing and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways.” You said that purity would deliver those that are not innocent. Lord, we believe that as we have prayed and made these decrees in faith, you will answer. We believe you will guard us, protect us, and deliver your people from evil and we thank you for it. Thank you for salvation for our loved ones, deliverance from our enemies, healing for the citizens of our cities, and blessing to overflow.

In Jesus’s name we pray,

Amen.

Prayer for Freedom of Speech

Let us pray for America.

Lord, we thank you that you have allowed us to live in America for so long where we have freedom of religion and freedom of speech. In recent times, Christians are being attacked for their beliefs and for the words of the Bible. Thank you for strong men and women who are willing to take a stand. Please forgive any priest or pastor in America who has chosen to quit preaching against sin out of fear of what people will think. We thank you for those who take the bold stand against suppression of religious speech. Please make all Christians in America bold and courageous and to not be ashamed of the entire gospel of Jesus Christ. May pastors follow their calling which is, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”(2 Timothy 4:2-5)

We pray for all who have suffered persecution. Help make them stronger as a result of this injustice against them. May people not seek to destroy them. We pray that all Christians will stand together with these who are suffering for the words which they have spoken. May people in America have a spirit of forgiveness rather than of hate. We pray that the truth that that is being spoken will convict the hearts of the lost.

Lord, you say in your Word that, “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose,” (Romans 8:28). We pray that events will embolden us all and bring about a spark of revival and spiritual awakening for this nation. Without an awakening, we will continue on the downward spiral, which is destroying the Christian values of this nation.

In Christ’s name,

Amen.

Litany of Prayer for the Opioid Epidemic

For those who are in the midst of addiction this very day/night, that they may seek recovery and a return to health, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For those in acute or chronic pain young and old and for their physicians and families making choices about treatment.

God hear our prayer.

For those who are working on being clean – stay by them in the hard times, in sickness and in health, in hope and in despair – and for those who lose their recovery, guide them back, one day at a time, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For families who mourn their precious children or parents, aunts or uncles, brothers or sisters, nieces or nephews who have overdosed, and for all who have lost dear friends, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For families and friends of those who are in the midst of addiction or on the path of recovery, that they may have the serenity to accept the things they cannot change, the courage to change the things they can, and the wisdom to know the difference, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For addicted babies born, for those who care for them, for frightened struggling parents who fear to lose them, for those who provide foster care, and for those who must decide for these babies’ welfare, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For first responders – police, EMTs, those who are in clinics and hospital emergency rooms and others – who save the lives of those on the brink of death, for those who have been unable to save someone, and for those who make political choices about the availability of naloxone, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For treatment programs of every kind, from medical rehabilitation to the simple twelve steps, offering hope and responsibility, and for those who need healing but instead experience incarceration, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

For educators in many settings – school, health care facilities, law enforcement, and faith communities (especially those who are in our midst today/tonight), and for all of us who open our minds and hearts to be educated in ways we can help, we pray to God.

God, hear our prayer.

Amen.

Prayer of Baptism

Grant, O Lord, that as we are baptized into the death of thy blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ, so by continually mortifying our corrupt affections we may be buried with him; and that through the grave and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection; for his merits, who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Religious Freedom

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the right of your church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O Heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome – for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us – this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer for Lawmakers and Others: Asking Divine guidance for those who make decisions

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, I call on you for guidance as this new legislative session assumes its responsibilities.

Forgetting those things that are behind and straining forward toward those things that are to come,

I ask you to help these men and women press on to serve those who look to them for leadership.

In this country where we celebrate the sanctity of every life and pay homage to a King (whose reign was all-too brief) may their efforts be crowned with compassion, justice, and mercy.

In this economy, compound their interest in finding creative solutions. Give them the ability to resist the temptation to pass the buck. Allow the currency of the time they spend to be consistent with those four familiar words engraved upon our history and our dollars: "In God we trust."

And when they are called upon to make change, may they be tellers of truth as well as cashiers of compromise. May the bottom line of decisions made in the United States House of Representatives make sense to those who make them and to those who will be impacted by them.

And though taxing at times, may this session be marked by an adequate reserve of respect and humility as well as a windfall of gratitude for the privilege you have allowed them in their calling as public servants.

In your Holy Name I pray.

Amen.
