Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual
and the community must enter every day.
and the community must enter every day.
Do not cast me off in my old age; do not forsake me when my strength is completely spent. (Psalm 71:9)
Reflection: An elderly person once said to me: “Don’t get old.” Losing our health and those we love can be very painful. When people cultivate a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, they will receive much healing, and in old age will be able to spend time in prayer for their children and grandchildren.
Prayer: Lord, let me look forward to the days when I will spend time with you praying for the healings needed by my family and friends. Amen.

A Prayer for the Feast Day of Thomas Cranmer
Merciful God, who through the work of Thomas Cranmer didst renew the worship of thy Church by restoring the language of the people, and through whose death didst reveal thy power in human weakness: Grant that by thy grace we may always worship thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who livest and reignest with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of St. Cuthbert
Everliving God, who didst call thy servants Aidan and Cuthbert to proclaim the gospel in northern England and endued them with loving hearts and gentle spirits: Grant us grace to live as they did, in simplicity, humility and love for the poor; through Jesus Christ, who came among us as one who serves, and who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Lenten Contrition from The Exeter Book
Give me, O Lord, patience and sense of purpose in each of the things which you send to beset me. You know the many wicked deeds which burden my heart. But out of compassion you set aside all blame, and receive me as your own. Please protect me through the dangers and confusion of my transient life on Earth, ensuring that in all things I strive for eternal life in Heaven. I know that I am very slow to make amends for my sins, despite the many favors you grant me. Fix my trust, my timid hopes, upon yourself, so that I may stand on a secure foundation. Lift up my thoughts with your wisdom. Take me out of this world as soon as I am fit to be received into the next.
Stand by me, Lord, and hold me upright when the gales of sin blow round me. And when the dark stormy night of wickedness closes in on me, guide my steps. My soul is already battered by the temptations to which I have submitted. My spirit is crushed by the weight of past misdeeds. My mind is stained by the memory of the evil in which I have participated. Throughout my life you have been unfailingly generous to me, although I have deserved only punishment.
The trees around me flourish and spread their branches. But I am hemmed in by the guilt which surrounds me, and I wither because of the poison of sin within me. Ah Lord, you are the only remedy, I accept that while I remain on Earth I must endure hardship, and must be spiritually destitute. I may enjoy the affection of friends, and the hospitality of strangers, but these are only brief flashes of light in the darkness. Let my suffering bring me true contrition, that I may receive your forgiveness, and so be made fit for the everlasting joy of Heaven. Amen.

A Prayer Against Violence
Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you that through your death on the Cross you disarmed the powers of evil.
Help us, we pray you, to enter into your victory and to stand in your authority against all evil.
Send forth your light and your truth, O Lord.
Bring to light the deeds of darkness and let plans of violence and murder be revealed.
By the power of your Holy Spirit convict those who have allowed their minds to be dominated by evil.
Lead them, O Lord, to true repentance that they may receive your new life and rejoice in your forgiving love. Amen.

My life has been torn apart from a battle with sexual harassment, being stalked, slandered, and retaliated against, to the point of threatening to fire me for complaining. My husband has been seriously ill with life-threatening diseases, including some heart attacks, and is disabled. Please pray for protection, healing, financial miracle, and fulfillment of our callings, as well as exposure and stopping the predators-may they repent or be arrested in their tracks.

A Prayer for the Feast Day of Saint Gregory of Nyssa
Almighty God, who hast revealed to thy church thine eternal Being of glorious majesty and perfect love as one God in Trinity of Persons: Give us grace that, like thy bishop Gregory of Nyssa, we may continue steadfast in the confession of this faith, and constant in our worship of thee, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who livest and reigns now and forever. Amen.

O Lord, Jesus Christ, who has said that you are the way, the truth, and the life: Suffer us not at any time to stray from thee, who art the way; nor to distrust your promises, who are the truth; nor to rest in any other thing than you, who are Heaven, nor in Earth; for your name’s sake. Amen.

A Prayer for the Feast Day of Perpetua and Her Companions
O God the King of saints, who didst strengthen thy servants Perpetua and Felicitas and their companions to make a good confession, staunchly resisting, for the cause of Christ, the claims of human affection, and encouraging one another in their time of trial: Grant that we who cherish their blessed memory may share their pure and steadfast faith, and win with them the palm of victory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord our God, we come to you as a little flock, asking you to accept us and keep us as your own, whom you will redeem in your time. Protect us always so that we remain strong in faith. Strengthen us in the faith that you are with us, helping us. Grant that your people may come to the light, to the honor of your name. So we entrust ourselves to your hands this night. Be with us, Lord our God, through your Spirit. Amen.
