Surprising Words

Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus. (Acts 4:30)

ReflectionDuring an overnight shift in the ER, I was summoned to see a young boy who had fallen and hit his head.

“I heard that throwing up after hitting your head is a bad thing, so I brought him in,” his mother said.

Though it was 1:30 in the morning, the mother was fully dressed and completely made up.  If she had time to get ready, how serious could it be? I wondered as I started my exam.

The boy’s pupils were equal and reactive. He was attentive and easily followed my directions. “Where did you hurt your head?” I asked. He pointed to the spot, and I felt it.

It was a normal neural exam. He was a normal kid who’d gotten a bump on the head. But as I turned to ask the nurse to give the mother a head injury instruction sheet, I heard myself say instead, “Well, his exam looks good, but I think we should send him to Vanderbilt to get a CT scan.”

I had no idea why I’d said that. The words just slipped out of my mouth. The nurse looked at me like I was a lunatic, and the mother seemed confused. Without knowing why, I sensed that something more was going on.

It was no small thing to find a neurosurgeon in the middle of the night. Moreover, the nurse had to order an ambulance to take the boy, and there was a ton of paperwork involved.

Though I had no objective data to back up my referral, I had a sense that something was happening that only God could explain.

Four hours later, the neurosurgeon phoned and surprised me with these words: “I’m glad you sent him over. I just got out of surgery. We evacuated a hematoma from his brain. If you hadn’t gotten him here in time, he would have died.”

I’m convinced that it was God who spoke the words to send that boy to Vanderbilt; he simply used my mouth to do it.

Today’s RX: When you hear a still, small voice, be open to it. You just might witness a miracle.

Prayer: Father, I invite you to speak through me today, offering kindness and counsel to those around me who are in need. May my words be pleasing to you and a comfort those who are hurting. Amen.

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O Heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Intercessions For Those Involved In Abortion, with special intention for Kenya

For those who are tempted by abortion, that God may plant in their hearts a love for the treasure of life and the strength to protect it; we pray to the Lord.

For all doctors, that inspired by their oath to protect life, they may know the grace of repentance, serving others as true disciples of the Gospel of Life; we pray to the Lord.

For all nurses, that inspired by the gentle compassion of Mary, the mother of God, they might serve as guardians of life in every moment of its existence; we pray to the Lord.

For all hospital administrators, that with wisdom and respect for life, they might lead those who work with them, for the nurturing and protection of all life; we pray to the Lord.

For parents who have lost a child to abortion and whose hearts are closed to the mercy of God, that they might know the grace of repentance, confession, and the healing embrace of the Father; we pray to the Lord.

For parents overwhelmed by grief and remorse at the loss of their child to abortion, that Jesus, the shepherd, so rich in mercy and compassion, might heal their broken hearts; we pray to the Lord.

For all who counsel the parents of aborted children, that God might reward them for the crosses they bear and grant them the words of wisdom to lead lost souls home to him; we pray to the Lord.

For each child aborted from his mother’s womb, that from their place in Heaven they might intercede for their mothers and fathers, for peace and healing and the gift of true repentance; we pray to the Lord.

Thus says the Lord:

In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping!

Rachel mourns her children,

She refuses to be consoled because her children are no more.

Thus says the Lord:

Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the tears form your eyes.

The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward.

There is hope for your future.

Amen.

Pray for Nigeria

Pray with Nigerian Christians for their protection, particularly for women at risk of being abducted and forced to marry Muslim men.

Pray for comfort for the thousands of displaced Nigerian Christians and for wisdom for those who serve these communities.

In the northern states of Nigeria with a Muslim majority, Christian communities are neglected and often left without clean water, clinics, and roads. Ask God to provide for their physical needs.

Amen.

A Prayer For Refugees

God of the exiles, you cared for the Israelites through their captivity in Egypt and later in Assyria. Care for and protect every person whose home is no longer safe, who has been forced to flee, who is living in a crowded camp, not knowing whether they will be taken in elsewhere. Bring them to safety so that they can live in joy and peace, without fear. God of the exiles, hear our prayer.

God of all nations, you are the Prince of Peace, and you promise that one day nation will not lift up sword against nation (Isa. 2:4). Mediate the conflicts between governments and people groups that make whole countries unsafe for their citizens. Overcome evil with good, and bring an end to terrorism around the world so that people everywhere can know the goodness of your reign. God of all nations, hear our prayer.

God of our hearts, in Jesus Christ, you have broken down the dividing wall of hostility between humanity and you. We were once far off, but you have sought us out and brought us near, even while we were sinners and strangers to your grace (Eph. 2:13-14). By the power of your Spirit, transform us with your trust, love, and generosity. Help us to extend your grace to others, regarding them as we would regard Jesus himself, so that we can be faithful ambassadors to you and your gospel of reconciliation, and so that your kingdom would break in even now. God of our hearts, hear our prayer.

Amen.

Prayer for South Africa

Lord, we present the country South Africa before you. We exalt and bless your name for all the blessings, the graces, and love that you have given to this nation.

This country is now weighed down by various social, political, and economic problems. We ask you to join the people of South Africa in their boat to calm the storms there.

May your grace challenge this nation and its leadership to repent and turn away from the sin of greed and corruption, which is a result of the worship of money, (Matthew 6:24).

Protect all those who are speaking out against greed, patronage, and corruption.

Renew this nation and its leadership by the light of the Gospel.

Bless all the people of South Africa with the values and the graces of your kingdom.

In Jesus’s name, we pray. Amen.

Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, who hast made us for thyself, so that our hearts are restless till they rest in thee: Grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing thy will, no weakness from doing it; but that in thy light we may see light clearly, and in thy service find our perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (St. Augustine)

Prayer For All About To Die

Lord Jesus Christ, as you stood by the bed of good Saint Joseph and gently led him home to Heaven, so shepherd every soul about to die to a paradise of perfect peace.
