Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual
and the community must enter every day.

When The Walls Came Tumbling Down
A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. (Proverbs 25:28)
Reflection: Thirteen-year-old Haley was exquisitely beautiful at a time when many middle school girls are awkward. She had unblemished porcelain skin and thick, dark curly hair. When she entered a room, people were stunned by her beauty. At the county fair, she won Fairest of the Fair. Wherever she went, everyone noticed her. Whatever the “it” factor was, she had it. In spades.
Then things began to change. When she turned fourteen, she came to see me for a sore throat, and I noticed a hint of cigarette smoke in her hair. A few months later, she blemished her otherwise snow-white skin with the first of many tattoos.
One day, when she was sixteen, I pointed to a homemade tattoo emblazoned on her upper arm and asked, “Whose initials are those?”
“Oh, that’s for Dougy-D.”
I knew the young man she was talking about, and he wasn’t exactly a role model. He was ten years older than she was, and he’d been in and out of the ER with injuries from fighting and drug use. I warned her that the cracks in her self-control and judgment could lead her where she didn’t want to go. But she paid no attention.
A few months passed, and I saw her again. This time I noticed fresh marks on her arm – not from tattoos, but from IV drug use. Again, she dismissed me.
Like today’s verse warns, the walls of this beautiful girl’s character had been dismantled one brick at a time until the barbarians at the gate had run roughshod through her fair city. Her pristine beauty was gone, replaced with dark eyeliner and darker circles under her eyes.
Nothing that anyone said could prevent her further destruction. She continued her risky behavior and eventually dropped out of school. With no structure and no self-control, it wasn’t surprising when the next time she showed up in the ER, she was dead on arrival from a drug overdose.
Untended cracks in a wall become great divides until the wall crumbles under disrepair. Haley was a tragic example of how self-centered choices hurt not only ourselves, but everyone around us. Only through self-control and accountability can we shore up the walls of defense against the enemy’s fiery darts.
Today’s RX: Preserve the walls around your heart and mind so you won’t be tempted to let them decay.
Prayer: Guard my heart and mind, Lord. Keep me away from temptation. Help me to plant myself firmly in your Word, so that I can be faithfully grounded in you. Amen.

A Prayer for Ethics, Anticorruption, and Justice
We pray that God raise up just and righteous leaders in government, business, and the church, and that these leaders surmount the corruption and fraud evident in our electoral process today.
We pray for greater transparency in our political and economic systems in this country.
We pray for those who are persecuted because they have taken a stand for righteousness, that they will have the courage to prevail and that God would protect them and their families from harm and intimidation.
We pray for the many Christians who work in the areas of ethics development and anti-corruption work in this country, that God strengthen their efforts, provide for their needs, and protect them from persecution and harm.

Prayer After the Election
Lord, as we end the election cycle and look ahead to a new administration, we pray for healing and wholeness for our nation. Our bonds of community must be repaired and restored. Our willingness to listen to one another must be strengthened. Our respect for every member of our society must be revived.
We pray for healing and wholeness in our nation. Guide us to move beyond divisive language. Guide us to move beyond angry rhetoric. Guide us to move beyond harsh judgments. Let us reject all forms violence. Let us learn to forgive and reconcile. Let us model inclusiveness and welcome to all. May we move forward with hope, may we move forward with faith, may we move forward with compassion and love.
We pray to be a part of repairing and restoring the bonds of community. We pray to be willing to listen to one another. We pray that we may respect every member of our society.
Lord, hear our prayers.

A prayer to heal the apostasy in the Roman Church
Hosea 14:4: I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them.
Help the Roman Church know that you, God, will heal its waywardness and love all its congregants and clergy freely, for your anger has turned away from this church.

Prayer For Christian Martyrs
Lord, so great is our love for you
That even though we walk in a world where speaking your name can mean certain death
Your faithful still speak it
And speak it all the louder.
Help us work for a world where all may speak their creeds
And pray their prayers
Without fear of violence.
Hear the prayers of those who abide with you in dangerous times and in dark valleys,
And who die with your name on their lips.
Draw them quickly to your side
Where they might know eternal peace.

El Maleh Rachamim (Jewish prayer for the dead)
God, filled with mercy, dwelling in the heavens' heights, bring proper rest beneath the wings of your Shechinah, amid the ranks of the holy and the pure, illuminating like the brilliance of the skies the souls of our beloved and our blameless who went to their eternal place of rest. May you who are the source of mercy shelter them beneath your wings eternally, and bind their souls among the living, that they may rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.

Prayer against foreign invasion, using Psalm 17
1. Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to our cry! Give ear to our prayer from lips free of deceit!
2. From your presence let our vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!
3. You have tried our hearts, you have visited us by night, you have tested us, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that our mouths will not transgress.
4. With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips we have avoided the ways of the violent.
5. Our steps have held fast to your paths; our feet have not slipped.
6. We call upon you, for you will answer us, O God; incline your ear to us; hear our words.
7. Wondrously show your steadfast love, Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.
8. Keep us as the apple of your eye; hide us in the shadow of your wings,
9. from the wicked who want to do us violence, our deadly enemies who are trying to invade our country.
10. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11. They are now threatening our borders; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.
12. They are like lions eager to tear, as young lions lurking in ambush.
13. Arise, O Lord! Confront them, subdue them! Deliver our souls from the wicked by your sword,
14. from men by your hand, O Lord, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants.
15. As for us, we shall behold your face in righteousness; when we awake, we shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Prayer by Asia Bibi
Resurrected Lord, allow your daughter Asia to rise again with you. Break my chains, make my heart free and go beyond these bars, and accompany my soul so that it is close to those who are dear to me, and that it remains always near you. Do not abandon me in the day of trouble, do not deprive me of your presence. You who have suffered torture and the cross, alleviate my suffering. Hold me near you, Lord Jesus. On the day of your resurrection, Jesus, I want to pray for my enemies, for those who hurt me. I pray for them and I beg you to forgive them for the harm they have done me. I ask you, Lord, to remove all obstacles so that I may obtain the blessing of freedom. I ask you to protect me and protect my family. Amen.

Prayers for the people of Haiti
For our Brothers and Sisters in Haiti affected by the earthquake, Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Haitian people, that help comes to them quickly and comfort comes to those who hurt, Lord, hear our prayer.
For the lost or buried, that they are found and reunited with their loved ones, Lord, hear our prayers.
For the relief workers, that they have the tools they need, the courage and the strength to respond fully, Lord, hear our prayers.
For the families in Haiti and in the United States who are waiting to hear from loved one, that good news comes to them, Lord, hear our prayers.
For those whose who have perished, may their souls rest with you, Oh Lord, where they will find eternal love.
God of all creation, as we weep with our family in Haiti, console us. In this time of crisis, open our eyes to look beyond the disaster to see Christ in our brothers and sisters in Haiti, as Christ sees us. Be with us as we stand in solidarity with those living and working in Haiti. Be with us in our mourning and guide our efforts to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, comfort the grieving, and stand for justice. With your mercy, sustain us at this time as we continue to work for peace and justice.
